Colour Chameleon

With the clocks going back and the temperatures dropping, it’s safe to say Winter is officially upon us. And as much as I detest those dirty, wet and windy days, when you luck that crisp, fresh weather and can don your snuggly Winter coats, it’s a beaut feeling!

I find with this weather can come preconceived notions that dark colours must be worn and our bolder shades are locked away for another year. However while I’ve felt that in previous years, this year I feel very differently. The AW17 catwalks showcased a rainbow palette which is thankfully now being reflected in our high street stores. Red, green, yellow, pink and all the colours in between are must haves for the festive season!

A lot of what we’ve seen on the catwalk, as well as on the street style set, is head to toe, tonal dressing. Work the one shade through all your pieces or opt for variations on a colour for an eye catching, modern ensemble. I’ve decided to take on the challenge and have pulled outfits from my wardrobe in a few colours to show you how I would do it. Are you game? I am, so let’s see if I can pull it off…

Red is undoubtedly the colour of the season, so naturally I had to put together a crimson ensemble. Instead of wearing one shade of red head to toe, I’ve incorporated burgundy velvet trousers for a rich offset. Mixing different shades is a great way to ease into tonal dressing without losing maximum impact. I’ve also opted for a black t-shirt with a red motif as another way of breaking up the block colours.

Oh so you thought the millennial pink phase was over? Think again! Just because it’s Winter, it doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your blush tones. Opt for heavier textures such as corduroy or velvet for cosy Winter vibes. I’ve worked a geometric print top in to add a little interest and also a polo neck underneath, because let’s face it, it’s bloody cold! On my wishlist for this look is a pink faux fur jacket like this one here.

Not a colour I usually wear, but lately I am finding myself drawn to purple. I used to love all things purple when I was younger (my bedroom was fully painted out in the colour), but it was something I grew out of. That was until I came across these two pieces on a recent shopping trip in Athlone. Cue this Power Ranger-esque ensemble! A great way to break up a block coloured outfit is to don a pair of white boots or shoes. Super on trend, but also helps to bring it down a notch (and the 1960’s mod vibes aren’t bad either)!
